Artist Statement

Born 1958 in Rotterdam. From 1994 till 1999 lived in London and Rotterdam, since January 2000 in New York. Had his first solo show in 1986 (at Galerie van Beveren, Rotterdam).
Around the same time (maybe a year earlier) started working on an ongoing project ‘horizon’ : an archive currently consisting of about 300 sheets with combinations of photos, found in books, magazines, newspapers, etc., bringing together a wide range of images, concentrating on visual analogies. From 1991 onwards and till the present day worked with an extensive slide archive. Slides of details of reproductions of photos of lace, tapisseries, embroidery, fabric, etc., in which natural or organic forms are used, flowers, plants. Painting with the intention of maintaining a relationship with the ‘outside’ world, the world at large, for which nature could be a stand in. And realizing that for this artist nature is most alive and present in the form of images.
