About

Glenn Hernandez is a Bay Area-based painter. He earned his Bachelor's in Studio Art from St. Olaf College in 2002. For over a decade, he worked in the Games and Animation Industries as a Concept Artist/Art Director/Production Designer, all the while maintaining a part-time studio practice. In the summer of 2021, he built a studio at his home where he has gradually refocused his attention full-time towards painting. He draws inspiration from regular everyday subjects nearby where he lives with his wife and their four-year-old son.

Artist Statement

My work is influenced by what I see around me. Distant hills, wild and manicured vegetation, cars, street signs, concrete curbs, and cul de sacs are distilled to a symbolic language. I incorporate these symbols into my compositions. At times, the paintings refer to an actual place; at others, they are of my own invention. Nonetheless, I develop them from an emulsion of observation, feeling, and memory whether I'm painting on location or in the studio.

As such, I never want my paintings to simply sit on the surface. I'd rather they feel as if they've bled out, pooled, hardened, and been burnished by the elements and the passage of time.
